The teaser trailer for “Fast Food Nation” just went up today.
This is based on the non-fiction book that takes a very serious look at McDonald’s and the rest of the fast food industry and how they’re fucking up our society. The book should be required reading in schools and is one of the most eye-opening, infuriating things I’ve ever read. I highly recommend it. Hopefully the movie will be able to live up to the book’s legacy.
My other favorite receipt from Todd’s Receipt Museum. See the previous post for more explanation.
You could easily name two benefits of eating with Todd: great conversation and the joy of sitting across from someone who’s easy on the eyes. But there’s a third benefit: itemized free refills. Yes, written proof that you wanted a second Diet Coke, and you got it. Free. Because you ate with Todd.
Todd Barry, owner of quite possibly the most soothing voice in comedy, also has a great website where he has set up a receipt museum. Todd scans in receipts and lets you know why they’re so special.
As far as product descriptions go, you’re doing fine, Cosi Sandwich Shop! When Todd dropped in to Cosi for some “between shows” raspberry tea, he didn’t expect to walk out of there with a receipt so museum-worthy. Look at how Todd’s one cup of raspberry tea is described “Tea, Hot Tea GT, Tea, Raspberry Tea.” Pretty thorough and coincidental, since Todd describes his comedy as “Comedy, Funny Comedy GT, Comedy, Raspberry Comedy.”
The 2 most recent episodes of Wonder Showzen have been really amazing. In the first one the gang has no budget and decide to go to Chinatown to buy a bootleg version of their show, which they then watch. The bootleg looks like a 3rd generation vhs dub and has tracking lines on it and skips quite a bit. The crew then declares war on the bootleg versions of themselves and after a brief scuffle they come to a truce. And then this happens:
And then in the most recent episode it’s a full length parody of “Hee-Haw,” which I’ve never seen, called “Horse Apples.” They had previously done a “Horse Apples” segment before:
The episode stars David Cross, Zach Galifianakis, Will Oldham, Jon Glaser, Todd Barry and a ton of other funny people. Download it here.
Here’s a video of Michael Cera and Alia Shawkat being interviewed by Joan Rivers. Joan seems to have a tough time with the interview and they kind of make fun of her a bit.
I’m tempted to write an entry like this every day, but damn if Achewood hasn’t been killing it lately. Today’s strip is no exception. I don’t want to spoil any of the jokes, but this one deals with Robert Smith and how goths only take baths. It even includes a visual representation:
I recently uploaded some Phil Hendrie bits for a friend and decided to share the links. These are both bits with Dave Oliva, one of my favorite characters. In the first one he’s convinced that “King Kong” is a racist film and is warning black people to “stay cool” and “keep it off the streets” during the run of the film. In the second bit Dave has been watching horror films to train himself for the kinds of stuff he’ll encounter as a member of LAPD. People call up and hilarity ensues.
I recently upped a trailer for the shot-for-shot remake of Indiana Jones and The Raiders of the Lost Ark to youtube and it’s been getting some views.
“In summer 1982, three Mississippi boys decided to film a shot-for-shot remake of their favourite movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark. After years of toil - which saw one of them being set alight, another having his head blown up, and the whole lot of them blagging the use of two US submarines - their backyard odyssey is being hailed as a crackpot masterpiece, not least by Steven Spielberg himself.”
That’s from a really great article called Raiders of the Lost Backyard by Jim Windolf. Dan Clowes read the article, loved it, and hooked up with a movie producer who had bought the rights to the life stories of the kids involved. Currently Clowes is finishing a script for a biopic on the filming.
I had the good fortune of seeing the remake at a film festival last year and let me tell you that it is amazing. They do some really dangerous stunts and the whole thing makes you feel good inside that these kids were able to turn their obsession into a very entertaining film. Sadly because of copyright laws they can only screen it at film festivals where all the profits are donated to charity. As a result it could be quite some time before we see any sort of official release.
The DVD cover art for two of my favorite shows was released today.
Here’s the cover for season 3 of Arrested Development, out August 29, which I will say again was the best show on television in forever.
And a week before that one comes out we’ll see season 2 of Veronica Mars, which features Alia Shawkat and Michael Cera from AD (one episode only), and is an equally entertaining show.
