Fall of the world’s own optimist

Thursday, June 29th, 2006

Last week Phil Hendrie broadcast his last radio show after 13 years in the business. I didn’t find out about Phil’s show until last year, and since then I’ve listened to hundreds of his shows and I’m still not tired of him. If you’re not familiar with him, Phil hosted a talk radio show where he played both the host and in a different voice, the guest as well. People who aren’t in on the joke call up and get into arguments with his “guests.” Here are some of my favorites:

Chris Norton-Farenheit 69
In this bit Chris Norton, aspiring adult filmmaker is angry about the fact that he was shooting a very hot sex scene with a fire raging in the background when some fireman interrupted the shoot and evacuated all the actors. Chris wants the National Endowment for the Arts to make a contribution to his film as a result.

Mavis Leonard-Santa Ain’t Black
Mavis Leonard is tired of the “new negro nonsense” of parents telling their kids that Santa Claus is black. She has called Phil to let him know about this problem and refers to the angry callers who try to change her mind as “kwanza women.” She also sings multiple negro spirituals throughout the call.

Steve Bosell-Don Johnson Wink
Phil’s most litigious guest is back again. This time Steve is suing because he thought a woman was making eyes at him, but it turns out she was looking at Don Johnson, seated behind Steve. After exchanging glances, Steve went over to the woman and tried to initiate sex. She turned him down and now he’s suing her for emotional distress. He’ll drop the lawsuit if the woman agrees to a night out with him.

Justin McAlroy-Turn Your Headlights Off
Justin, a teenager who does not have a license, is urging other teens to take their parents car and drive around with their lights off to protest the oppression of adults.

Thanks to everyone who tried to listen to me today on kbeach. They’ve been having some technical difficulties and as a result the online broadcasting has been down. So it turned out I did a whole show for the two people in the student union. Their expressions never changed, so I have no clue if they enjoyed “Send Me An Angel” by Real Life, but I like to think they did. Hopefully this will all be remedied for next week and I’ll let you know if that’s the case around that time.

Just a reminder, I’ll be on kbeach.org (I hate the name too) from 1 to 3 pm pst today. I’m going to start off with an indietastic set and work my way into the hijinx probably next week. So if you feel like being gently rocked for a couple hours, please tune in.

Lately I’ve found myself asking the question, “How old is Sue B.?” Today as I was riding my bike home, I finally got the answer.

The Zoo Crew

It looks like I’m going to be a dj again. Starting next week you can listen to me every Tuesday from 1-3 PM on kbeach.org, the CSU Long Beach station. It’s internet only, but hey, I can’t really complain. All the shows will be archived as MP3s on the site, and I’m going to work on setting up a podcast of it. It’s free format for the summer, so I’m going to mess around and talk and play weird stuff.

There’s a review up of the new Michel Gondry movie on Ain’t It Cool News. I’m pretty curious to see what Gondry does without a Kaufman script, and from the review it sounds like this film is going to be more along the lines of his music video work.

Here’s a clip from the film:

I saw ASSSSCAT tonight and guess who showed up? That’s right, Amy Poehler!

kina like a boy down there

She was accompanied by 2/4 of UCB, Ian Roberts and Matt Walsh. I was disappointed we couldn’t get Matt Besser and a straight 4 for 4, but hey, the show was free.

Poehler, Roberts and Walsh came out first and talked to the audience for awhile and asked if anyone was on a date. One woman raised her hand. Roberts then made a comment about how when you’re on dates you have to hide all your problems and/or mental illness. The woman clarified that she and her date had been married for 3 weeks. Everyone gave them a round of applause and then Walsh yelled at the staff to go get them a 20 dollar bill from the cash register. A crisp 20 dollar bill arrived shortly and the couple was very surprised and happy. Then Bon Jovi started playing and Amy lip-synced to it. The crowd was totally hyped up and then the rest of the performers came out and killed.

I watched 27 episodes of The Office americana in two days. I saw the pilot way back when and hated it, and as a result didn’t give the show much of a chance. I decided to give it another shot and boy am I glad I did. I could watch Jenna Fischer smile all day long.

seriously

They’ve used a lot of the best elements of the bbc version, but have also branched out in entirely new directions, which makes for a very entertaining show. I can’t wait for the third season. Anyway, I think my favorite episode is “Dwight’s Speech,” which you can download here.

Here are the rest of the “Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace” episodes: 3, 4, 5, and 6.

I also found this great music video from the last episode. Again, do yourself a favor and check this show out.

And here are the first two episodes on Google Video if you want to just view it through that:

Yesterday Jordan showed me something that completely blew my mind. It was a TV show called “Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace.” I watched 5 episodes and it’s now one of my favorites. I haven’t laughed that much since “Arrested Development.”

So here’s the premise of the show from Wikipedia:

“Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace is a cult comedy series made for Channel 4. Created by Matthew Holness and Richard Ayoade, it is a parody of the horror genre and revolves around the character of Garth Marenghi himself, a writer of pulp fiction played by Matthew Holness.

The series’ premise is that in the mid-1980s, Garth Marenghi and his publisher Dean Learner made their own TV series on a shoestring budget. Set in Darkplace Hospital in Romford, Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace tells of the adventures of Dr. Rick Dagless, MD, as he fights the forces of darkness while simultaneously coping with the pressures of running a modern hospital. In spite of the programme’s obvious flaws — wooden acting, cringeworthy scripts and amazingly poor special effects, to name but three — both Marenghi and Learner still regard the series as a masterpiece. But nobody else does, which is why it’s taken nearly 20 years to reach the screen.”

I found two good clips of it on youtube. Here are the opening credits:

and here’s a great “bike chase”

I uploaded the first two episodes, and will be putting up the rest on here as well. Episode 1 and Episode 2.
